This time I made studies in how pony faces and expressions work. And as traditional for my I always take poor, innocent OC’s of other blogs and draw them.

Why I do that? I dunno, maybe because I’m too lazy to learn how to draw my own OC’x? That I get bored of my own things too fast and seek something else that gets my attention.

Or I’m just an attention whore :x

I tend more to the latter I must admit, but the first reason does play a role in it.

I did make some (major) mistakes, epecially with the hair, but when I noticed WHAT I did wrong I already made 4 pictures of it and decided to keep it for the sake of consistency (Who am I kidding? Me and consistency… Har, Har, Har!)

Here what I had in mind to draw (since I know I’m bad with emotions and stuff I’ll “explain” the pictures a bit)

Angry: Aulana being angry, you shouldn’t have said that!

Crying: Now you’ve made her cry, be ashamed! I need to learn how to draw tears though…

Flirty: My second shot on “bedroom eyes” Not very convincing but I guess enough for flirty.

I’m sowwyyy! Who could be mad at this cute little face, even when she broke the antique vase of your grandmother, hum?

Little beauty: My first shot on “bedroom” eyes. When you ask me, nothing of real emotions here, like a nice smile for the album, not really much more, what do you all think?

Sad: Aulana being sad, I think that was quite well done.

Shy: You have embarrassed her. Lets wait if this was a good embarrassment or not.

Smiling: The first drawing of her. A bit pompous mane here. But I think over all quite good ^^

Wat?! My try on a “WAT” face. I don’t know if it worked out fine or not, but it’s still an expression!

Rodeo Training: Applejack on her training ground. I seriously need to learn how to draw ponies in motion, not to mention that she doesn’t have a neck >.<

Always working: Looks like AJ? And I bet this her dream is one of her more usual ones. Exactly, AJ dreaming about working on the farm. Still almost missing neck and I seriously need to learn how to draw her hat <.<

Simply Applejack: Lately I’ve drawn ponies in “poses” and felt that would be my best shot on AJ. But still that hat! Neck almost none existent as well and she looks a tad too chubby for my liking.

Lately I’m throwing out fanart and giftart left and right, trying to get noticed and gain some “popularity”. I always thought I’m above that but it seems not to while forgetting about the people who already like me, and talk to me on a regular basis.

The mod is truly amazing and I bet a lot like AJ. Working from dust till dawn, seemingly living to work and not working to live. The blog, although text based with well used screen captures, is in my opinion the best Canon AJ blog I know. It’s really like AJ of the show had opened up the tumblr and is answering fan questions. There was never the feeling that she might be out of character and don’t get me started on the RP blog.

Wanna live like in Ponyville, interacting with one of the famous mane six? Applejack is the gal to go. Everything well written and it is a delight to read it. It always seems like that what you’re doing could be aired on the next episode and AJ is always in character.

Above that all the mod is an amazing person as well. Juggling work, the blogs and personal life like a master. I know sometimes all of it can get a little bit over board and the last few months were a bit rough, but here I say, keep going, stay amazing and good luck for yourself and your blogs here =:}

I just went back through over 900 liked posts and dug out all the art tutorials so i can keep track of them. I guess this might be helpful to some of you guys, so here you go.

Some of these were gutted from posts where the original was deleted and so can’t be linked to in the masterpost list - especially one by Tumblr user melkh who has since either deleted or changed their url, so props to them.

Here we go then!

Freeware

Alchemy- this is a really fun program. You play around making abstract shapes until you start to see something in them, kind of like a Rorschach test. Then you use the shapes as a base to draw it from.
MyPaint- a pretty decent painting program that also has the benefit of working on Unix systems.
openCanvas 1.1- I haven’t used openCanvas in years but it was a nice program with a pretty unique feel to it.
ArtRage- Only used this a couple of times donkey’s years ago just before I got oC, but I’ve heard good things about it.
The GIMP - In a similar vein to Photoshop, but free. I couldn’t get on with it when I tried it out a few years ago, but it’s pretty popular and is available on Unix systems and Macs.

Not-free-ware

Photoshop- Standard painting fare. Probably the most flexible program (particularly the latest versions) but not designed to act in a “natural” way. If you’ve used it for painting versus something like Painter you know what I mean. Who the fuck pays for it though? Google “Photoshop tumblr masterpost” and take your pick.
Paint Tool Sai- Far more affordable and definitely worth paying for if you can. The brushes are very decent (especially when they’ve been tweaked a little), the gui is simple and intuitive, and I dare you to find a program with which making smooth lineart is easier.
Corel Painter- My program of choice for most things. More tools than you could ever possibly use and pretty cheap on a student license, providing that you can prove you’re a student! It’s got a few bugs but if you want realism or a more natural feel than PS or SAI this is the program for you.

Can somebody please, please tell me why I’m better at drawing someone’s OC’s than my own?

Can somebody tell me, why they turn out much better, than when I want to draw something entirely for me? @.@

I think that I do give extra efforts when I’m trying to make somebody a nice present (though it doesn’t always work out even when I want to make a present)

Could you explain me how to put the same effort in my own work? I seem not to be able to do this on myself ._.

Well though I do like those pictures I still can’t do decent and convincing shadows with pencil and I do have troubles drawing a ponie’s tail and mane from different angles (especially the tail of the laying Aulana looks weird, but it was my best guess how it should look like from this direction.

Nonetheless enjoy the art and give Aulana a shot.

Yay bad art day(s) The last few days I can’t get any tasteful done, so I decided to idle my time away with scribbles of one of my OC’s (I don’t like his mane style and tried some different versions out) and a few “anatomy” studies I did within a few minutes drawing nudies I found posing on the web.

Blech, all of them look horrid, but hey, practice is practice, even if it’s horrid practice ._.

I’ve been drawing poses again. You see Shiva showing her athletic body. In her kind of job she has to be agile because of … reasons, you know?

I originally meant to draw those poses in different viewing points, from above, below, the front and behind.

Sad truth is, it looks horrible _._

It’s not forgotten tough but I guess I’ll let it be for the moment.

Again it’s only for practicing more advanced positions.

I intended no smut, honestly and I didn’t tried out any of the positions myself to see how it looks like and twisted every single joint I have <.<

For everyone else who feel that she might look a bit unmotivated in this position, well, I said nothing!

After all perhaps I should cease ravishing other peoples OC’s and start using my own OC’s for drawing practice? For both it wouldn’t be so rude to abuse them and I would learn how to properly draw my own characters. What do you think, stopping drawing random OC’s and focussing more on my own?

Poor http://askshiva.tumblr.com/ feels bored, all Hounds are on the loose, the “toys” and “pets” are exhausted from the last playing session and nopony else there to keep her accompanied.

Well yes, another try to draw the human body, I still suck at it, especially shading, good hair, smooth “womanly” lines and stuff. Oh by the way, everything drawn with my left hand but that doesn’t excuse the flaws beside some uneven lines :\

I drew this whole picture with my left hand since my right is still cemented and aching like no tomorrow, when I do more than nothing with it.

Fun fact, despite that, the picture wouldn’t look better if my hand was good since I can’t blame perspective errors on using the wrong hand ^^’ The only thing I made with the right was writing.

I’ve seen many many artists, including myself, being able to draw “okay” hands - but the thumb always ends up weird like this:

In many MANY examples of hands, the thumb is drawn like it was this big lump of “something” lacking one or any joints at all.
